Here are the changes I made:<\/p>\n<p>Get latest updates (but don&#8217;t upgrade to 8.04).<\/p>\n<p>Label my external hard drive:<br \/>\ne2label \/dev\/sdb1 Backup<\/p>\n<p>And check that it worked:<br \/>\nvol_id \/dev\/sdb1<\/p>\n<p>Create a mount point<br \/>\nsudo mkdir \/mnt\/backup<\/p>\n<p>Add it to \/etc\/fstab with this line:<br \/>\nLABEL=Backup    \/mnt\/backup     ext3    defaults        0       2<br \/>\n(The 0 means don&#8217;t back it up.  The 2 means run fsck, but after the root filesystem is done.)<\/p>\n<p>Via mplayer:<br \/>\nInstall GStreamer ffmpeg video plugin<br \/>\nInstall GStreamer plugins for aac, xvid, mpeg, faad<br \/>\nInstall GStreamer plugins for mms, wavpack, quicktime, musepack<br \/>\nInstall GStreamer extra plugins<\/p>\n<p>Install wine<br \/>\nInstall cabextract<br \/>\nFollow these instructions: http:\/\/appdb.winehq.org\/objectManager.php?sClass=version&#038;iId=7179&#038;iTestingId=15035<\/p>\n<p>Set up the printer with these instructions: http:\/\/ubuntuforums.org\/showthread.php?t=674727<br \/>\nSet up the scanner with these instructions: http:\/\/solutions.brother.com\/linux\/sol\/printer\/linux\/sane_install.html<\/p>\n<p>Install firefox per these directions:<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net\/<\/p>\n<p>Install rsnapshot<br \/>\nEdit \/etc\/cron.d\/rsnapshot<br \/>\n    0 *\/4           * * *           root    \/usr\/bin\/rsnapshot hourly<br \/>\nCreate cron.daily\/rsnapshot<br \/>\n    #!\/bin\/sh<br \/>\n    \/usr\/bin\/rsnapshot daily<br \/>\nAnd again for weekly and monthly<\/p>\n<p>Install libtiff-tools (for tiffcp)<\/p>\n<p>Install kino<br \/>\nedit \/etc\/udev\/rules.d\/40-permissions.rules to put raw1394 in the video group<\/p>\n<p>wget -q http:\/\/packages.medibuntu.org\/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add &#8211; &#038;&#038; sudo apt-get update<br \/>\nsudo wget http:\/\/www.medibuntu.org\/sources.list.d\/gutsy.list -O \/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/medibuntu.list<br \/>\nsudo apt-get update<br \/>\nOpen Synaptic (System, Administration, Synaptic Package Manager)<br \/>\nEnable the Recommended Updates (Settings, Repositories, Select the Updates tab, check the box in &#8220;Recommended Updates (gutsy-updates)&#8221;, click Close)<br \/>\nReload your package information (Ctrl+R)<br \/>\nsudo apt-get install acroread acroread-escript acroread-plugins mozilla-acroread<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I started with Ubuntu 7.10 on a Dell Inspirion 530n.
