I accidentally purchased “crunchy” peanut butter. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking: “What is crunchy peanut butter?” Let me explain.\u00a0 It’s like “egg-shell” mayonnaise or “baking-soda clump” cookies. It’s peanut butter where the raw ingredients haven’t been fully processed. I imagine it’s what you find at the bottom of the peanut crushing machine where the blades can’t quite reach the peanuts.<\/p>\n
I would have expected that peanut butter manufacturers would just throw out the uncrushed peanuts, or turn them into pig feed or something. I was surprised to learn that they actually throw a small disclaimer (“crunchy”) on the can and stores sell it right next to the real peanut butter. I suppose some extremely price-sensitive consumers might be willing to buy an inferior product for a dirt-cheap price, but amazingly most stores sell it for the same price as the good peanut butter! It appears they’re banking on customer confusion and accidental purchases.<\/p>\n
I lasted about 3 minutes with a pair of tweezers before I gave up. My food processor wasn’t much help either, and it made a real mess. I can’t take it back to the store because it is<\/i> accurately labeled. I’m thinking that a centrifuge with a strainer might be my best bet, but that seems a little pricey. Instead, I’ll accept the money as lost and use this opportunity to warn other consumers not to make the same mistake. Read the labels when you buy peanut butter! It’s technically the same ingredients, so look elsewhere on the label for something like “partially processed”, “incomplete”, or as I saw on my container, the weasel-word “crunchy”.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
