{"id":79,"date":"2005-10-13T08:13:53","date_gmt":"2005-10-13T13:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stein.everybody.org\/journal\/?p=79"},"modified":"2013-04-27T14:19:00","modified_gmt":"2013-04-27T18:19:00","slug":"dietary-guidelines-2005","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jeremystein.com\/journal\/dietary-guidelines-2005\/","title":{"rendered":"Dietary Guidelines 2005"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four fruits and five vegetables a day<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interrobang\" title=\"?!, the interrobang\">\u203d<\/a>  Three cups of milk a day\u203d  60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise daily\u203d  The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.gov\/dietaryguidelines\/dga2005\/document\/\">2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans<\/a> seem to apply better to a calf than a computer professional.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Why didn&#8217;t they just tell us to drink more water and leave it at that?  I like water; I could do the 8 glasses.  (Despite the <a href=\"http:\/\/colonhealth.net\/free_reports\/h2oartcl.htm\" rel=\"nofollow\">importance of excess water<\/a> held by many <small>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/toxins\/water.htm\">wrongly<\/a>)<\/small>, the dietary guidelines say <q cite=\"http:\/\/www.health.gov\/dietaryguidelines\/dga2005\/report\/HTML\/D7_Fluid.htm\">the Committee makes no special recommendations concerning water intake<\/q>)<\/p>\n<p>The truth is, I fall far short of these guidelines.  And, try as I might to find excuses, the truth is that these recommendations are well-founded. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve decided that it&#8217;s time to take action.  I am going to try, for one week, to follow these guidelines.  I hope Wegmans keeps its produce section well-stocked.  (Where is the produce section?)<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s an apocryphal story of a casino owner who wanted to quit smoking.  He allegedly rented a billboard with his face and the caption &#8220;if you catch me smoking, I&#8217;ll pay you $10,000&#8221; (or some other large sum, depending on who tells the story).  The threat of public humiliation is great motivation.  I will post the food I eat and track how I&#8217;m doing against the guidelines. I was working on my sermon this week, so I used that as an excuse to not exercise every day.  I <em>did<\/em> make a concerted effort to consume more milk, yogurt and cheesecake [kidding on the cheesecake].  Whew &#8212; the USDA wants us to drink a <em>lot<\/em> of milk!  I bought carrot sticks &#8212; I like carrot sticks &#8212; but I guess I&#8217;m not a big eater of dark green vegetables.  I can&#8217;t think of anything besides spinach, and I&#8217;m no Popeye.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I&#8217;ll do this again sometime.
