On the back foot
A Cape Town colleague just used the phrase “on the back foot” in a meeting. It’s a cricket reference. When a player is “on the back foot”, they’re playing a defensive move. To play “on the front foot” is to play offensively. In business terms, it’s a reference to being in a position where you’re responding to things going badly (“on the back foot”) rather than getting ahead of them and solving problems before they flare up (“on the front foot”).
