Periodic job is running without cron

I looked far a wide to determine why some code was running every 5 minutes without being in the cron table (this was OS X / BSD). I had looked in /var/cron/tabs and found no matching job. The problem was that I hadn’t looked in /etc/crontab. This is a kind of system crontab with a slightly different format from the user crontabs.
